About This Book

Zechariah prophesied to a returned remnant struggling to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. The foundations were laid, but enthusiasm had faded. Into that discouragement the Lord speaks through vivid night visions, symbolic actions, and far reaching promises.

The early chapters centre on repentance and reassurance. The Lord has not abandoned His covenant people. He promises to dwell again in their midst, to cleanse sin, and to raise up a faithful priest king. The later chapters widen the horizon. They speak of a humble King, of rejection and piercing, of refining judgment, and of a final day when the Lord will reign as King over all the earth. Zechariah moves from immediate rebuilding to eschatological hope, binding present obedience to future glory.

Zechariah calls God’s people to repent, rebuild, and rest their hope in the coming King whom the Lord Himself will establish.

Preach this book with patience. Let the imagery unfold slowly, always anchored in its historical setting before tracing its fulfilment in Christ.

Structure of the Book

Zechariah divides naturally into two main sections.

  1. Night visions and temple encouragement
A call to return to the Lord, eight night visions, the cleansing of Joshua, and the crowning of the priest king, chs.1 to 8
  2. Oracles of the coming King and the final day
Promises of a humble yet victorious ruler, rejection and refining, and the universal reign of the Lord, chs.9 to 14

Key Themes

  • The humble King, a ruler who comes lowly and mounted on a donkey.

Preaching and Teaching Helps

Zechariah stretches both preacher and congregation.

  • Start with the historical context, situate the message among returned exiles rebuilding the temple.
  • Explain the imagery clearly, symbols must be interpreted in light of the immediate vision.
  • Trace messianic fulfilment carefully, show how the New Testament draws directly from this book.
  • Hold together present obedience and future hope, the remnant was called to build because God would act.
  • Keep the Lord central, the repeated refrain is that the Lord of hosts has spoken and will accomplish His purpose.

This Book in the Story of Scripture

Zechariah stands at the close of the Old Testament era, looking forward with increasing clarity to the Messiah. Its promises echo in the Gospels, from the triumphal entry to the shepherd struck and the sheep scattered.

The book lifts the eyes of a small and fragile community to a global horizon where the Lord reigns as King. What began with rebuilding a modest temple ends with a vision of universal worship and the holiness of all life before God.

The Lord will be King over all the earth, and His redemptive purposes will not fail.
