FAQ

Honest answers about how we work and why we do what we do.

The Expositor’s Library exists to serve readers who love God’s Word and want clear, trustworthy guidance on Bible commentaries.
Below are answers to the questions we are most often asked about what we do, what we believe, and how our reviews are produced.

Q1. Do you sell books or operate as a bookstore?

No — we are not a commercial site or a retailer.
We review commentaries so that our readers can make informed decisions about which volumes are worth buying or using.
Our aim is to highlight the best tools for studying Scripture, not to sell them.

We do include affiliate links (for example, to Amazon). If a reader buys through one of those links, we may receive a small commission — at no extra cost to you. This simply helps us cover the running costs of the site and keep it free to use.

Q2. Do you accept review copies or outside submissions?

Yes, we occasionally accept reviews written by others or commentaries provided for review.
However, we reserve the right to publish only reviews that we can fully endorse.
While scores might vary slightly in tone or emphasis, we will only post material that we fundamentally agree with — both in spirit and in substance.

Our goal is to ensure that everything appearing under The Expositor’s Library banner is consistent with our standards of faithfulness and honesty.

Q3. How do you calculate your scores?

Each review is built around six criteria:

  1. Faithfulness to the Text
  2. Christ-centredness
  3. Depth of Insight
  4. Clarity of Writing
  5. Pastoral Usefulness
  6. Readability

Each area is weighed together to form a single overall rating (1–10), which reflects the commentary’s general usefulness.

  • 0–3: Not of practical use.
  • 4–6: Some value, but proceed with caution.
  • 7–8: Very helpful and reliable.
  • 9–10: Exceptional — should be part of every expositor’s library.

The goal is not mathematical precision, but a clear sense of how much this commentary can be trusted and enjoyed.

Q4. What is your doctrinal stance?

We are evangelical and reformed in our convictions.
We believe in the sufficiency of Scripture — that the Bible is the final authority for both doctrine and practice.
While that phrase is often repeated, we mean it deeply. For us, this is a hill to die on.
Our confidence rests not in our own insight but in the unchanging truth of God’s Word.

Q5. How do you handle commentaries you disagree with?

We aim to be gracious and balanced.
Every book will be read in full, and we will endeavour to see what is best in each.
However, honesty requires that we name error plainly.
If a commentary’s approach could lead to poor exegesis or false teaching, we will say so — not unkindly, but clearly.

We do not discriminate between denominations or traditions, but we will not commend what is unbiblical or misleading.

Q6. What do your affiliate links mean?

We participate in the Amazon Associates Program, which allows us to earn a small commission when readers purchase through our links.
This does not affect the price you pay and never influences our reviews.
We only recommend books we believe are valuable and faithful.

Your use of these links helps sustain the site and allows us to keep creating content without advertising clutter or paywalls.

Q7. What is “Buy Me a Coffee”?

“Buy Me a Coffee” is a simple and secure way for readers to support this work directly.
It’s like leaving a small tip — a kind token of encouragement that helps cover hosting and maintenance costs.
You can find the button on our sidebar. Every contribution, however small, is deeply appreciated.

Q8. Can readers suggest commentaries or series for review?

Absolutely!
We warmly welcome suggestions and requests.
If there’s a commentary or series you’d like us to consider, please get in touch through our Contact page.
We can’t guarantee every request will appear, but we read every message and take all suggestions seriously.

Q9. May I quote or share your reviews elsewhere?

Yes — we’re glad for our content to be shared.
You may quote our review excerpts, summaries, or scores on social media, church websites, or personal blogs.
All we ask is that you include a direct link back to the original review on The Expositor’s Library so readers can view it in context and ensure accuracy.

Q10. How often are new reviews published?

Our goal is to post a new review each week.
That rhythm may vary — sometimes more frequently, sometimes less — depending on study and writing time.
Our commitment, however, remains steady: each review will be honest, balanced, and worth your time.
